Mission Statement
The Maya Zahira School of Belly Dance promotes education in Middle Eastern dance, culture, music, and costuming, and the enhancement of physical, emotional, and social well-being to the public through belly dance classes, seminars, and performance attendance and participation.
Our Goals:
1. to promote multi-cultural awareness and tolerance in our community and the world at large
2. to assist women with issues of health, fitness, body image, and self-esteem
Our Philosophies:
1. We believe that every student can learn to dance. No matter your age, shape, size, fitness level, health, or learning style, we can help you learn to dance.
2. We are here to honor your personal dance goals. Whether you are joining our classes to get in shape, to improve your overall health, to lose weight, to learn about other cultures, to learn a new style of dance, to meet new friends, to spend time with a family member or friend, to improve your body image, or to be a student or professional performer, we will do everything we can to help you reach your goals.
3. It is important to us that you have the very best teachers for your dance classes. All of our instructors complete intensive teacher training and student teaching, as well as ongoing advanced dance training.
4. We believe that our organization offers something very unique—Our instructors break down the dance moves in a way that makes them much easier to understand and apply. In turn, this allows our students to progress much more quickly.
5. It is our intention to provide a positive and happy experience for all of our dance students. Because of this, we strongly encourage a spirit of sisterhood, cooperation, and caring, and we therefore discourage gossip and other negative or disruptive behavior.
6. We believe that students of all levels should be allowed to perform if the wish to do so. Whether you are a beginner, intermediate, or advanced dancer, we believe that the experience obtained through performing is more important than an expectation for performance perfection. Our philosophy is that performing should be a fun and positive learning experience for all involved. Similarly, we wish for our classes to be fun and low-pressure, and so we always honor those students who do not wish to perform.
7. Our organization strongly believes in collaboration with other dance organizations and teachers. We feel that it benefits the entire community when we all work together. Most importantly, we feel that we are part of a rich and diverse belly dance community with teachers/performers of a variety of philosophies and backgrounds, and that each and every teacher/performer has something unique to offer her students and the community. As such, we promote ALL area teachers and community dance events, and we ask our students and staff to do the same.
8. We are always striving to improve our organization in every way possible. As such, we welcome all suggestions and will consider every single idea that is submitted to us. Please keep in mind, however, that we must consider the best interest of the entire organization, and so we regrettably cannot grant every request.
